Trust and Verify

MKUltra is documented. The myths that borrow its name still need receipts.

essential question

How do we acknowledge real government wrongdoing without using it as a blank check for unrelated claims?

The 4-minute briefing

not cleared

The textbook-sized gap, closed without the textbook-sized reading.

MKUltra was a secret CIA program that funded research into drugs, interrogation, and behavior modification. Some experiments involved LSD and other methods without informed consent. The program violated rights and medical ethics. Many files were deliberately destroyed in 1973, but surviving financial records, investigations, and sworn testimony document important parts of what occurred.

The destroyed files create real uncertainty, but uncertainty has boundaries. Evidence that a program existed does not confirm every modern claim involving “mind control.” This unit adds lateral reading: leave a suspicious page, investigate the source, trace media to its origin, and compare independent reporting. Verification is a method for both shocking claims and comforting ones.

3 ideas that unlock the unit

01

Documented wrongdoing sets a floor

MKUltra’s existence, secrecy, and ethical violations are confirmed. Investigation should begin there, not minimize it.

02

Missing records do not have infinite content

Destroyed files justify questions and cautious language, not any desired conclusion about what they contained.

03

Read laterally

Do not let one page define its own credibility. Open new sources to check ownership, expertise, reputation, and the original evidence.

A post uses a real MKUltra document to claim that a current celebrity’s behavior is controlled by the same program.

How should the post be evaluated?

Choose a move to see what it reveals. Historical decisions rarely come with perfect options.
